7 Alaska Small Ship Cruises To Consider

alaska cruise ship small

All of the small boat Alaska cruise options we offer have naturalist guides on board. The quality of onboard guides is one of the most important criteria we think about when considering which Alaska small ship cruises we represent. Wave goodbye to busy ports to instead view bears, hike, paddle by glaciers and forge local connections in small towns. Enjoy a flexible schedule, capitalizing on wildlife encounters and the collective whims of the group. The atmosphere is casual and all inclusive in cost, encouraging everyone on board to participate. This Prince William Sound cruise spends an adventurous 8 days exploring the least-visited shores in coastal Alaska, home to the densest concentration of tidewater glaciers.

With just 10 other guests, we developed warm and lasting friendships. The owners of the Discovery, Dean and Meg, were so accommodating and helpful. Dean got a sense for what the group wanted to do and tried to cater to everyone’s interest and activity level. The two guides, Phyllis and Hugh, were extremely knowledgeable and fun to be around. We did a lot, saw a lot, learned a lot, and in general had an amazing week. Meg worked her magic for three meals a day in the kitchen and the food was fantastic with lots of fresh seafood and accommodations for everyone’s dietary restrictions.

I saw bears foraging in the intertidal grasses lining the shore and sea lions basking in the sun on an outcropping of rocks. These are experiences you’re not likely to have aboard a big ship, certainly not at such close range. If you're energized by the idea of diverse entertainment, plentiful onboard activities, and exploring Alaska's port towns as well as its scenic wonders, then you'll likely love the experience of cruising on a large vessel. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. AdventureSmith helped us know what to expect and what we needed (and didn't need) to bring. Great trip and overall experience, I would recommend AdventureSmith to anyone looking for a vacation. The bar had good beer, liquor and wine and the bartender was always ready with some kind of treat when we came back from our adventures.

[I most enjoyed] the longer excursions (e.g. full day hike) and kayaking (a first for me). St. James Bay was extremely beautiful, and I'm glad we spent the whole day there. Hiking Mt. Riley in Haines was also a highlight (challenging hike, with a rewarding view up top).

Most Alaska cruises are casual, so no need to dress up for dinner. Ketchikan - Known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the world,’ Ketchikan is a city rich in history. The area started off by building a fish saltery, followed by a salmon cannery, mining copper and gold, and even supplying timber for the construction of WWII airplanes. It's easy to see why with museums, libraries, restaurants, and amazing wildlife sightings such as mountain goats, black bears, sea otters, humpback whales, orcas, and seals.

PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND, Fast becoming one of the most exciting cruise destinations in the world. Moss and moose, thunderous glaciers and tufted puffins—Alaska is full of surprises. The Captain and Crew of the Discovery made us feel special during the entire voyage. Their knowledge of the region, the hidden coves, the history, and the culture, all made for a magical experience. I can truly say that this trip exceeded my already high expectations. My two sons and my father-in-law also joined and they were equally impressed.

13 best all-inclusive cruise lines

From spacious suites to intimate social areas, the ships are designed to give you a sense of privacy and allow you to fully relax and unwind. Each ship has 465 cabins and has the same layout, number of decks, restaurants, etc. This means going back on a Viking cruise kind of feels like going back home, as there is an instant familiarity. The line is Norwegian-owned and their ships have a decidedly Scandinavian design to them.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

The listed price of a cruise on a mainstream line can be a little deceiving. Once you add in all the additional charges for specialty dining, beverages, WiFi, gratuity, and shore excursions you begin to see the real cost of a cruise that’s not so inclusive. The Experience More on Short Cruises package is the only one available on sailings of seven days or fewer. Azamara does offer several extra-fee packages to make its inclusive fares even more inclusive. Its five "Experience More" packages bundle together extra-fee items (shore excursion credit, Wi-Fi, premium beverages, spa credit, laundry and/or Chef's Table dining) for a roughly 30% discount compared with purchasing those amenities a la carte.

Booking a cruise has never been easier with flexible payment methods and payment options.

All-inclusive cruising is a rather tricky term, as each cruise line offering them puts their own spin on the definition. Luxury cruising delivers the most inclusive voyages, typically bundling dining, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, port and tax fees, and gratuities into fares. Both the inclusive fares and onboard package cover unlimited Wi-Fi, crew gratuities and wine, beer and cocktails ordered on board (as well as the 18% beverage service charge usually tacked onto bar bills). Singles can get in on the savings, too, with the Experience More for Solo Travelers package. It features the Ultimate Beverage Package for one, unlimited Wi-Fi for one device, a $350 shore excursions credit, a $150 onboard spa credit, Chef's Table or Three Table Tour, and three bags of laundry during the voyage.

Settle in for dazzling entertainment or dance until dawn beneath the stars. And with top-notch restaurants onboard, every meal turns into a global taste-tour that’s as immersive as your Ultimate World Cruise. Set to debut in 2025, Four Seasons Yacht’s first 95-suite ship will feature 14 decks, a length of 679 feet, and a width of 88 feet.

You will pay extra for spa treatments, cigars and other purchases like the most exclusive wines and spirits. Relax on thermal loungers, awaken the senses in showers delivering aromatherapy and multiple jets, take meditation classes, and work out in the gym and yoga and Pilates studio. Unwind in women's and men's saunas, steam rooms and relaxation lounges, and soak away your cares in three plunge pools. The included wines and spirits are particularly noteworthy, especially the more than 100 whiskeys.

And if you have a craving for lobster, a call will be made and lobster will be served that evening. All-inclusive cruises, on the other hand, provide guests with nearly everything they could need and want while at sea (and maybe even on land too). Of course, the per-person cruise fare will be higher on all-inclusive cruises, but you’ll get so much more included and will see no surprises on your credit card statement.

In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. You can now cruise the Caribbean year round on one of our newest Edge series ships, Celebrity Beyond, starting in 2024. The Caribbean is a cruiser’s dream vacation in every season, but the best time to cruise the Caribbean can depend on your schedule, your travel budget and your travel desires.

SAND-WRITE YOUR ADVENTURE

If you aren't careful about the details, marketing phrases or limited time deals can make you think you'll be getting more than what's included in the fare. The other caveat to watch for on mainstream lines is the wide variability between prices, which can fluctuate day-to-day and is based on many factors, including the size and age of the ship. That may mean you can find an all-inclusive deal on one ship on a particular sailing date, but not on similar cruises. Two passengers sharing a cabin must both select Have It All at the time of booking. Unlike most cruise all-inclusive packages, however, HAL's Have It All doesn't include crew gratuities.

On our longer Caribbean itineraries, we visit the Southern Caribbean, Central America, and South America, crossing the Panama Canal. With a host of off-the-beaten-path islands, our Southern and Eastern Caribbean sailings deliver ample time for exploring. A Western Caribbean cruise means an array of experiences—from sun-bleached sandy strands, ancient ruins, or scuba dives on a coral-encrusted wall.

According to Holland America, other/additional perks may become available with the Have It All package when the price changes. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Seabourn has created a Mindful Living Program in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Weil, an esteemed pioneer in integrative medicine. The line offers complimentary classes with Dr. Weil-trained practitioners in guided meditation, as well as free Pure-Form yoga and Pilates group workouts. Sushi@Koko's skilled chefs cut the finest sashimi, flashing knives as if the fish were an art piece.

For the more adventurous passengers all Seabourn ships have an aft water sports marina that guests can take advantage of when the ship is anchored. From here activities like kayaking, long boarding, and even wind-surfing can be enjoyed. Known for its personalized service, each passenger on Seabourn Cruise Line is treated like royalty on board.

Celebrity can get you close to those deals with a suite in The Retreat for $430 per person, per night. Based on our search, any cruise you find that includes a large balcony cabin with Wi-Fi, beverage packages, most specialty dining, gratuities, and some excursions with a price tag near or below $450 per person per night is a deal. Norwegian also offers a paid upgrade to the Free at Sea perks called Free at Sea Plus. Some cruise lines attract with low price offers, but it rarely stays at the original cruise price.

Seabourn Venture includes all-suite accommodations and all other Seabourn complimentary amenities other than The Grill. A second expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, will debut in 2023 with similar all-inclusive features. International economy airfare (or air credit) and airport-to-ship transfers, and roundtrip transfers between home and airport by private car service are among them. To complicate matters even more, many cruise lines that offer all-inclusive fares do so as an add-on option, making it a challenge to sort out what you are getting.
